When John-M first saw Beco WALLFORM in a trade magazine back in 1999 he knew that this was the way to build his house on Shetland.

On these windswept islands, exposed as it is to some of the UK's most extreme weather conditions, energy efficiency is acknowledged by everyone as a key performance factor in any building and John-M has always been keen to incorporate higher standards to make life more comfortable.

John M Tulloch researched the building method fully before making his decision to use it, travelling as far south as Devon to visit sites and discuss the pros and cons of the WALLFORM system. The contacts with various builders and clients confirmed his decision to use the WALLFORM 313 system and when he found the plot in Cullister with wide open southerly views, the design work started.

From John-M's own initial design, a local architectural practice completed the final plans for the project incorporating panoramic two storey glazing and a circular stair tower as particular features. Heating costs will be kept to a minimum with the use of solar collectors and high specification glass, although the house also has underfloor heating throughout, connected to an energy efficient oil condensing boiler for back-up.

Because of the high wind speeds experienced on the isle, the concrete used to fill the WALLFORM system would normally have required steel reinforcement throughout, which would have added significantly to the build time and cost. However, in the end a far simpler solution was employed - steel fibres from Bekaert Building Products were added to the concrete at the batching plant instead. These fibres do the same job as full reinforcement but at a fraction of the cost and add nothing to the build time.

To further maximise the use of the building envelope, Jablite "Slimfix" SIPS panels have been specified for the roof structure.

A final key feature of the finished home will be one of John-M's own handmade kitchens, as specified by his wife Heather!

Don't expect to wait too much longer for a photograph of the finished house! And if you would like to visit this project, you can get in touch with John-M via the Contact Us page.
